White Settlers (2015)

Image
Very simple, plot wise - a couple buy a house in rural Scotland and almost immediately are targeted by a group of hostile locals who break into the house with evil intent. The couple try to escape. That's the whole story - there is no subplot, no interactions with the locals to suggest motive, no small 'precursor' building up of hostile actions - just straight into the home invasion. Clearly, these guys (meaning either hostiles or the film makers) don't have time to muck around.  It's actually refreshing to find a film where the antagonists are this direct and don't go through an preamble of putting dead birds in mail boxes or kidnapping family pets. This allows the film - even at a lean 80 minutes - to focus on a protracted cat-and-mouse sequence as Sarah and Ed try to survive their night of Hell.  A quaint house warming ritual I liked how the characters were not designed to be likeable or sympathetic - quite the opposite, they are a couple of big city English ...

The Lair (2022)

Image
I really enjoyed Neil Marshall's debut, Dog Soldiers , back in the day; and though I didn't understand what all the excitement was about, lots of people praised The Descent , because apparently feminism is two women in a cave arguing over who owns a man; and I am a sucker for people being trapped in a cave stories and even more so when there are flesh eating monsters, so I didn't not like that film. I can't think of anything amusing to say here, so I will say nothing. But The Lair is a very, very poor excuse for a monster movie - even if large parts of it are set underground and, yes, there are flesh eating monsters. It's an entirely predictable Aliens -but-in-Afghanistan nonsense. Plodding and dull, without surprises or innovation.  So, Lt Kate Sinclair (Charlotte Kirk) is an RAF pilot deployed in Afghanistan.  We see Sinclair in a plane in the skies above Afghanistan, in the throes of getting shot down.  Then there is a brief flash back, to TWO DAYS EARLIER, as ...

White Girl (2019)

Image
So, there is a short film on Shudder called White Girl.  It's directed by Nadia Latif.  It's 13 minutes long. The plot is fairly simple, as befits a short film.  The titular white girl - a wholesome looking teen - wanders the streets of London, interacting briefly with various people - usually people of colour who react in a variety of ways, mostly guarded or hostile. In the end she is approached by an elderly woman in a hijab, and the girl savagely murders her. This is the picture pretty much everyone uses when they talk about this film, so I'll use it, too. On Shudder, a lot of the reviews complain about racism.  I mean, what are we to make of this? no polotics for Satans sakes Or what about: Next up, the sequel "Black Girl" and the prequal "Arab girl" and the remake "Asian Girl"....Oh, wait. Thats right, your only allowed to point at white folks in "current year". If people cant see the psychological programming going on in Hollywo...
