Cemetery of Terror (1985)

Image
It's almost Halloween, when people foolish venture into cemeteries and are terrified, so in the spirit of  public service I provide this warning.  Don't do it, kids.  Heed the warning of this Mexican occult meddling / slasher / zombie / something or other.   There are two films here, in RubĂ©n Galindo Jr's messy directorial debut. The first one is rubbish.  The second one isn't exactly good but is actually quite fun in spite / because of its cheapness and overall silliness. The first film is a fairly standard "Witless teens meddle in the occult, awaken a demon and it eats their faces" type of deal, only not as much fun as that sounds.  Our "teens" are distinctly older looking and unlikeable; perhaps fortunately unlikeable as they are doomed to die in pretty short order.  No final girls here.  Bored, horny guys trick their girlfriends to accompany them to An Old Creepy House on Halloween, promising them they are attending a "Jet set" party....

Verotika (2019)

Image
This is authentically terrible.  Written and directed by hardcore musical legend (allegedly) Glen Danzig and drawing on stories and visual stylings of the verotik magazine established by hardcore publishing legend (very allegedly) Glen Danzig, this reeks of being a vanity project with a lot more vanity than project.  It just sucks, on any level. Now, if I say there all the stories are seedy, gory and rank with nudity, this will give entirely the wrong idea of what we are dealing with here.  It does not suck because it is morally repugnant.  It sucks because it sucks. It's just not good film making.  It isn't even good bad film making, or good nasty film making.    Perhaps calling it bad film making is being too generous.  It's just bad. The film comes in three part, each a brief half hour that is made to feel endless by the plodding inanity.  In the first part - a prostitute with eyes for nipples (why?) gets upset when a client is less than t...

Castle Freak (1995)

Image
What, exactly, were Stuart Gordon's claim to be cinema's pre-eminent adaptor of HP Lovecraft? The hideous monster that lurks in the darkness, tormenting the innocent with his depravity.  Image Bauer Hosting His credentials: Reanimator , a witless take on one of Lovecraft's most morbidly (literally) funny stories; Dagon , a blundering rendition of The Shadow over Innsmouth, and a few odds and ends like Castle Freak which owes a few vague ideas to The Outsider;  From Beyond (a lurid 'reimagining' of a  minor story) and a brief, camp rendering of The Dreams In The Witch House - where he added the sex scenes Lovecraft carelessly forgot to include in his original mind bending yarn. This is the only Lovecrafty bit in the film, where monstrous Gorgio comes face to face with ... himself Thing is, none of these films are actually any good, on any level.  Nor are they worthy failures, like the recent The Colour Out of Space .  Stuart Gordon's 'Lovecraft' films a...

Humanoids From The Deep (1980)

Image
This is ... not good.  Like, bad. Grotesque, and not in a good way. A small fishing community ins assailed by malevolent demi-human fish creatures that like to rend flesh and rape women,  the latter is shown in embarrassingly bad - but needlessly prolonged - sequences.  And repeated, in case you didn't get the idea first time round.  Fish guys raping human girls.  For your amusement.  Because there wasn't no way anyone was expecting anyone would be scared by this shit. In case you didn't believe me about the fish guy rape bit It would have been rubbish in the 1960s, but this was made in 1980, so there is no excuse for it being this inept and clueless.  Horror films have often been a stepping stone for film makers - a simple plot, gallons of fake blood and some gratuitous nudity.  Roger Corman's persistently schlocky endeavours probably helped more film writers, actors, directors and technicians learn their trade - and pay the bills - than any pret...

Gun Woman (2014)

Image
Best advice for this film is: read the summary below (no spoilers).  If, based on that, you have ANY reservations AT ALL, avoid. If you aren't put off, you should probably still avoid, but for different reasons. There is a gun.  There is a woman.  I guess we know now how they came up with the title Gun Woman (2014, directed by Kurando Mitsutake) tells a vaguely familiar story.  A depraved maniac tortures, rapes and murders a young woman.  Her husband, a brilliant surgeon, decides to gain revenge.  Realising his quarry is taking steps to protect himself and only now indulges his predilections in a sealed, guarded facility and only with fresh corpses, the surgeon concocts a plan.  He kidnaps a young woman, imprisons her and trains her to be a lethal fighting machine.  He then explains she's going to be drugged to appear dead, offered to the target as 'fresh meet' and when she recovers consciousness, she'll arm herself with the weapons he will have ...

Bunny, the Killer Thing (2015)

Image
** Contains spoilers - but none that could spoil your enjoyment of this film, for it is not possible to enjoy it on any level.  Also some trigger warnings : rape and sexual assault ** If you ever get the chance to see a Finnish film called Bunny, the Killer Thing - don't. Longer version: I watched it recently on Shudder and wrote a review so caustic it seems they have pulled the film altogether.  Long may it stay pulled. In short: a giant crazy rabbit with a huge schlong terrorizes a group of horny teens in a remote cabin. That makes it sound interesting, a sort of lurid parody of every slasher film ever made.  It isn't, and it isn't.  Don't see it. Longer version: an unidentified man and a woman arrive at an isolated cabin.  They are surprised to discover there are already people there.  They are even more surprised when they are tasered, and the woman shot in the head with a shot gun.  At least, for her, the ordeal is over.  her partner is injec...
